Day 97

Sometimes I think of small groups of people, cliques, teams, etc. as microcosms of the broader political systems in which we live.
But, it may more be that case that there is no such thing as a group of people without a political atmosphere; rather than small groups being understood as little analogues.

Someone told me today that she believes there are two kinds of friendships; the first kind she described as genuine - a relationship in which those involved are in it for the sake of it, rather than merely for the sake of avoiding lonliness. Or rather, even if avoiding lonliness is a factor, it is but a small factor.

The second kind of friendship is ingenuine. People are friends because they simply want to think of themselves as the kind of people who have friends, or are popular, or whatever else. They don't value the friendships, they value the notion of having friends in general.

Let us imagine this dichotomy to be true for a moment. Honestly, I find myself struggling as to what kinds of friendships I have with whom. Some friendships are genuine in the fullest, but others... I do question whether I am seeking something meaningful, or in truth seeking a sense of acceptence from whoever will offer it. It is a tricky business.
